01

Classify the problem first

If the need is standard and common, an existing product usually offers a faster start. If the process differentiates the business or contains many exceptions, custom software becomes a stronger candidate.

02

When off-the-shelf is right

For accounting, payroll, basic CRM and common functions, mature products offer lower initial cost and faster implementation.

  • Most requirements are standard
  • The process can reasonably adapt to the product
  • Speed matters more than differentiation
03

When custom software creates value

Custom software earns its place when it removes repetition from critical processes, connects systems or creates a differentiated customer experience.

04

Decide through total cost

Do not compare only licence and development fees. Include configuration, integration, training, migration, operational friction and future change.
